The Silver Anniversary!
It's hard to imagine it's been 25 years since the GWPCA was granted official AKC recognition for our National Field Championships. And it's even harder to imagine many of us who were there at that event, will be in attendance in 2007, but we will be. We are all a bit grayer, a bit slower, but I'll bet most of us still can remember that event like it was last year.
A Bit of Background
The breed first appeared in the US in the 1920's and became more popular following WWII. Their German breed name Drahthaar continued to be used. In 1953 Drahthaar owners gathered in Chicago and formed a club to promote the breed and to learn from each other. They decided to call their club the German Drahthaar Club of America and registered with the American Field. The club held their field trials under the auspices of the American Field as well.
In 1959, the breed was granted AKC recognition and the name of the breed was changed (per AKC request) to German (Deutsch) Wirehair (Drahthaar) Pointer. The word pointer was added to the name at the request of the AKC to designate which group of sporting dogs the breed would compete with. At that time, there were no versatile testing programs for any breed, so they had to choose which cubby hole to fit into. While the breed is well known for their retrieving abilities, it certainly would not wish to compete in Retriever trials only. The choice was made to be included with the pointing breeds and be able to enter pointing breed field trials. At this time each breed club chose what their requirements would be for a dog to complete a Field Championship. The GWPCA requires every dog working toward a FC title to earn points in retrieving stakes and to complete a water test before that title is awarded.
The club became the German Wirehaired Pointer Club of America and is the official parent club for the breed here in the United States.
The First National Field Trials
In 1963 the GWPCA held it's first Annual field trial in Ingleside Illinois. This event has been held every year since, always held in the mid west. In 1976 the Seattle-Tacoma GWP club held the very first National outside of the Midwest, and after that it began to rotate around the country. One should note that the GWPCA National events are unique compared to many other pointing breed clubs Nationals. Even in the beginning, it was decided that our National Specialty show and National Field events would be held at the same time, in the same location every year. They were determined that we keep our breed together, one breed which could and would be competitive in both venues. Today that tradition continues with many dogs showing at the Specialty and then heading over to the trial grounds.
We Are Official!
In the early 1980's the club asked AKC to grant our National Field trial official Championship status. While the club members always referred to this event as the Nationals, no official title was bestowed upon the winners. In 1982 we were granted permission to consider our event as our National Championship and we were allowed to give the title GWPCA National Champion to the winner. After 2 years of probation, the GWPCA proved to AKC that indeed our event was worthy of the title of National Champion, and we dropped the GWPCA prefix. Today all dogs that win either our National Championship, or National Amateur Championship carry the title NFC or NAFC on their AKC pedigrees.
The 1982 National Championship came home to Illinois and was run on the Green River grounds. Unfortunately the title of National Champion was withheld that year. Our National Amateur Championship was won by FC/AFC Halb's Miss Chief, bred and owned by Doug and Penny Ljungren of Seattle WA. Missy was owner trained and handled by Doug.
In 1983 we moved to Selah, WA, quite a different venue from the wheat fields of Illinois. Our 1983 GWPCA National Champion was FC/AFC Baron Vom Schyrental owned by Mike Weatherton. The Amateur Championship was once again awarded to FC/AFC Halbs Miss Chief. (Since 1980 this is the only GWP National event I have not attended!)
The following year we headed east and the venue for the Nationals was Killdeer Plains, Ohio. It was to be another Sure Shot year. FC/AFC Halb's Sure Shot (full sister to Miss Chief) won all the marbles and was named both 1994 National Champion and 1994 National Amateur Champion! "Shooter" was owned, bred and handled by Doug Ljungren. (This double win has only happened 3 times in the history of the event
As the years flew by, the event has grown in size and prestige. Today, our National field events include a Puppy Classic, a Derby Classic, the Futurity, a water test and the two Championships. What used to be run in a 3-day period, now typically takes almost a week to complete!
While our National Championships have grown, they have never lost their original purpose. To bring together the best our breed has to offer both in dogs and in people. It's a week where old friends and competitors come together to celebrate their devotion to a breed, to swap old stories, tell stupid jokes, consume a bit too much Yucca Flats and just have some fun.
25 years... and back we come to Illinois! If you would like to see some truly classy German Wirehaired Pointers in action, be in Pinckneyville, IL October 29th. 25 years.... I can't be that old!

Should you own a German Wirehaired Pointer?
As the acting breeder referral for the German Wirehaired Pointer Club of America, I receive a lot of phone calls and emails from people looking for a puppy. Many of these inquiries are from people who have never owned the breed before, and may have never owned a sporting breed before. I often ask them; Why this breed?
Those who have never owned one before have seen pictures of GWP puppies, and they fall in love with those adorable fuzzy little puppies. Some have done a bit of homework and have read about the breed and believe it's the right breed for them. Then we have the hunters who are looking for a hard core working dog.
Should you purchase a GWP?

Should you purchase a GWP?
Will this breed fit into your lives?
Let's see.
The first thing I want people to know about this breed is this; this is a high energy breed. They need exercise, the more the better. If you think a 30 minute walk, once a day is adequate exercise, don't get a German Wirehaired Pointer.
Adequate exercise for a GWP will include a good hard hour run at least once or twice a week. Daily exercise will keep them and you happier. We always say, a tired GWP is a better GWP. This is a thinking breed, they need a job, something to keep their brains engaged in the right direction. If you don't give them something to keep them occupied, they will find something to do, and you probably won't appreciate their choices very much.
Here are some activities to consider if you are not hunters and want to bring a GWP into your home;
Obedience training
Some people get involved with obedience training their GWP's. While not known to make great competitive obedience dogs (they tend to think to much) this kind of activity will keep you and your Wire on the same page.
Hunting Tests
The AKC has a hunting test program which will allow you to get your dog out into the field and doing what he was bred to do. There are 3 levels, Junior, Senior and Master. These tests are a wonderful way for you to bond with your GWP, meet other GWP owners and we encourage everyone to give it a try. You can find out more about AKC hunt test by going to the AKC web page.
Agility
Agility is a relatively new sport for our dogs. You may have seen some Agility competitions on TV, or at a local dog show. GWP's seem to do pretty well in Agility, it makes them thing and it's full of running, jumping and climbing. Great exercise!
Field Trials
There are several venues of pointing dog field trials out there. There are AKC trials, NBHA, NSTRA each of which has different levels of competition. Follow the links to read about them all. Around the U.S. there are local GWP clubs, each of which holds both hunting tests and field trials. Joining a local GWP club not only gets you involved with other GWP owners, but it will introduce you to many ways to enjoy your dog.
NAVHDA
The North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association is comprised of owners of the versatile hunting breeds (Vizsla, German Shorthair Pointers, GWP's, Griffons, Brittany's) who get together to help each other train dogs. Their focus is on making a dog a useful hunting companion for the upland and waterfowl hunter. Even if you never plan to actually take to the field with a gun, working your dog on birds is a good thing. Remember, your GWP is a gun dog, a versatile hunter for water, field and forest.
Are GWP's Nasty? I've heard they bite!

- If you don't like the outdoors, don't get a German Wirehaired Pointer.
- If you want a "sometimes dog", a dog who will go lie down and nap, don't get a German Wirehaired Pointer.
- If you are an immaculate housekeeper with white rugs and dirt annoys you, don't get a German Wirehaired Pointer.
- If you are a truly kind hearted soul who hates to see dogs disciplined, and can't bear to correct puppies, don't get a German Wirehaired Pointer.
- If you don't have a good strong high fence, you probably should not own a German Wirehaired Pointer.
- If you are not a hunter, should you own a GWP?

Last, but not least the GWP is a breed that is extremely loyal to their families. In Germany, they were expected to protect hearth and home, and these instincts are still in there. They are natually protective of what they deem as theirs, and this will include your house, your car, your yard and your children.

I suggest to all new GWP owners that they should not encourage or condone any signs of aggression from a young Wirehair. Most all Wires will go through a period of over protectiveness at some time in their growing up stages, and this should be stopped quickly leaving little doubt in their minds that this will not be tolerated. Don't worry, should your dog ever find the need to really protect you, you will be surprised at how well they will step up to do so.
Also, many GWP's can become dog aggressive at some point in their lives. They don't like to share, and this is another thing they need to learn will not be tolerated. Since most GWP owners will hunt with others, who also own dogs, our GWP's need to learn that they must tolerate and get along. We can't make them love other dogs, but they cannot attack or be allowed to become bullies. At the first sign of dog aggression, they must be given a swift and hard corrrection.
Now that I have given you all of the negative things about this breed, here are some of the great things.
- GWP's are loyal, almost to a fault. They love their owners and a more loyal breed is hard to find.
- GWP's are very intelligent, they can almost outthink us, and sometimes this can be a pain in the butt.
- GWP's generally have tremendous prey drive which makes them wonderful and determined hunting dogs. Show them what you want them to hunt, and they will give it their all.
- GWP's don't shed like most dogs. A good coated dog usually only needs a bath now and then and they don't drop hair all over your house.
- GWP's are a fairly healthy breed. Hip dysplasia, thyroid and some forms of cancer are out there but in general they don't have many of the health concerns of other breeds.
Should you decide a GWP is the breed for you, do your homework and find a breeder who is breeding the type of dog you wish to own. You can contact me, or go to the GWPCA website to look for breeders.

When Putter was a young dog, I decided I wanted to look for a future bride for him. I always admired the dogs from the Sure Shot line owned by Doug and Penny Ljungren who lived in the Seattle area. I had seen their dogs many times at our National Championships and they were consistent performers generation after generation. They had good short, harsh coats, decent enough conformation and were bird dogs!
The Sure Shot Connection
The Sure Shot line was tightly line bred to FC AFC Halb von Pommoregon and Penny had a breeding with her very successful bitch FC AFC NAFC Halb's Miss Chief to a young male she owned, Sure Shot's Benny Boy. I decided this was the direction I wanted to go, so I bought a puppy bitch from that litter.
That little girl was named Sure Shot's Justa Racie Lacie. Lacie was a small bitch, with a good natural liver and white ticked and patched, harsh coat. We showed her a couple of times and she accumulated a few points toward her show CH. But Lacie's bag was the field. We trialed her as a puppy and derby and she easily won her puppy and derby points. One highlight in her field career came at a trial run by the NJAFTC, which was open to all breeds, both American Field and AKC. I couldn't be there, so a friend took her to that trial and ran her in the Derby stake. The majority of the entries were AF pointers, the best on the east coast, mostly run by the pros. When my friend took Lacie to the line, everyone wanted to know what kind of dog she was, and just why she was entered? To everyone amazement, this little fuzzy dog took off like a shot and brought home the blue ribbon! That was a sweet win!

Lacie also was 2nd in the GWPCA Field Futurity in Southern CA in 1988. She lost the Futurity to Sure Shots Cascade Miss Tique owned by Penny Ljungren who would later be bred to Lacies' son, Top Flite.
When Lacie was 2 yrs old, we had her hips OFA'd (came back Good) and we planned the timing of the breeding with Putter. The litter was born February 2, 1990 and totaled 8 puppies. We were quite surprised to see we had 3 white puppies in that litter, all males. It wasn't expected, especially considering that there were no white dogs anywhere in 5 generations. In fact, there were more solid livers than anything in the pedigrees.
When they hit 8 wks old, all were sold except 1. A white male. I didn't want a white dog, since at that point I was still heavily influenced by the old German thinking. In Germany white is not an acceptable color for a GWP and while there were liver and white dogs here, they were not very popular. But, once again, no one seemed to want this puppy, so he stayed. Again, thank goodness no one wanted him.
This puppy turned out to be DC AFC Dunkees Justa Top Flite MH, Topper to his friends.

When this puppy was 4 mos. old, we took him down to the pond to do some introduction to the water. I tossed a bumper for the big dogs, and the puppy played in the water and started to swim. Then I tossed the bumper for him, short tosses and he retrieved them all back to me. One toss got a bit wild and it landed across the pond and up into some underbrush, I figured I'd have to bring out one of the older dogs to go fetch it up. But to my surprise, this little puppy swam across the pond, crawled up into the underbrush, found the bumper and brought it back to me. Hmmmm, maybe he is a keeper I thought.
Topper proved to be a keeper for sure. He had wonderful conformation with a beautiful smooth ground-eating gait. When he ran, he floated over the ground, never looking like he was working hard. In the show ring, his effortless movement brought him many Best of Breeds and Group wins. Topper was a very sound dog, both in mind and in body.
At that time, in the mid 1990's Topper was the only GWP who was a Group winning Dual Champion. His accomplishments included multiple Specialty wins, and was a Top Ten Group and Breed dog and at the same time a Top Ten Gun Dog, one of only a few who could boast those accomplishments.
Topper was just a good dog, and could be trusted in almost any situation. He traveled in the motor home with us, always choosing the front passenger seat so he could look out the window. Or he would curl up on the couch to nap while traveling. When Topper was 10 years old we took him cross country to compete in the GWP Nationals. The event was in Oregon, so it was a long trip from PA. We also took along our young bitch, Weasie (more on her later) who unfortunately came into season just before we left home. He was fine with her, until we arrived on the west coast when the stress of being with a bitch ready to be bred was apparently too much for him.
I arrived at the show grounds, and went to say hello to old friends and wanted to find out where to park. When I returned to the rig, Topper came out the door in obvious distress. He was bloating, and in trouble. Luckily we had a vet on the grounds that took immediate control of the situation (I turned into a blubbering mess) and we got him to a local vet within minutes. They performed emergency surgery on him and saved his life. Three days later we picked him up from the vets office, took him to the show, showed him in the Veterans class, and he won! There wasn't a dry eye in the house. Everyone except the judge knew what had happened to him and he got a standing ovation. The appreciation from my fellow GWP brought me to tears and they will never know how much that meant to me. As soon as we were done showing him, Topper went back to the vet’s office and stayed for the duration of the Nationals. It was the safest place for him to recover.
Topper proved to be a very good stud dog and was bred to a nice assortment of bitches from around the country.
With 13 breedings he produced:

Topper stayed in wonderful health until he died quite suddenly when he was 13. I don't know if I will ever be lucky enough to have another one like him, an all around wonderful animal.
Unfortunately, Toppers mother, Lacie was killed by a car and was never bred again. I will never know if that breeding just clicked, or if she was a super producer.

Tequila
This Lacie/Putter breeding also produced another wonderful dog. Ch/AFC/NAFC Justa Tequila Sunset SH, a liver roan bitch.
Tequila was co owned my good friend Dr. Francis Sakiey. She lived with, and was trained by Fran to all of her field titles.
Tequila was a typical GWP bitch, always wanting to do things her way, but she was no where as bad as her grandmother Bump. One time I was taking her to a trial in CT, and she was in the back of my pickup truck (with a topper on it) in a crate. For some reason she decided she just didn't want to be in that crate anymore, and she broke out of it. We were on Rt 95 heading in NY City, on the Cross Bronx expressway when I saw her nose the window open. I kept hitting the brakes to knock her down, but she accomplished her goal of getting out, and out the window she went!
Now, keep in mind, the Cross Bronx expressway is a very, very busy 4 lane highway in NYC and I was also towing a horse trailer, so there was no way I could stop right there. I had to keep driving until I found a place to pull over. When she jumped, we were in a tunnel under the river, so it was dark and at that point I figured she was a goner for sure.
Once I was able to pull over, I jumped out and started running back down the road. An ambulance came out of the tunnel and they were waving their arms and gesturing behind them... I wasn't sure if that was good news, or bad. But then, a miracle, out came Tequila, running for all she was worth with a line of slow moving angry New Yorkers behind her!!!!
Luckily she ran right to me, I scooped her up and ran back to the truck. She came out of that jam with a small scrape on her leg, but I darn near had a nervous breakdown. Tequila ran in that trial in CT and brought home a ribbon for her troubles. Needless to say, she rode home on the front seat, right next to me.
Tequilas' shining moment came at the 1993 GWPCA National Championships when she was named the National Amateur Champion over 18 other GWP's. She was handled to that prestigious win by Fran. That National was a lot of fun for the Justa GWP gang with Tequila winning, Topper coming in 2nd, another of our dogs, Bounty winning 3rd.
Tequila was bred twice to FC AFC NFC Selkirks Bounty Hunter and produced DC/AFC Bounty's Justa Pegleg Pete and Ch/AFC Bounty's Justa Margarita, along with many other wonderful hunting dogs. She lived to be 12 yrs old.
